Daya saing memegang peranan penting dalam perekonomian dan telah menjadi kajian utama para pengambil kebijakan. Penilaian utama terhadap daya saing mencakup kondisi ekonomi, efektivitas pemerintahan, efisiensi bisnis, kondisi infrastruktur, hubungan dengan perbankan dan sumber daya manusia. Dalam konteks pertanian, suatu daerah yang memiliki daya saing pertanian yang baik menunjukkan kondisi pertanian yang juga lebih baik, pangan yang terpenuhi dengan baik dan tingkat kesejahteraan yang meningkat.
Perspektif daya saing dalam buku ini disusun sebagai suatu entitas yang mendukung pemenuhan pangan rumah tangga dan meningkatkan kesejahteraan petani. Sehubungan dengan uraian konsepsi daya saing, buku ini juga membahas beberapa tokoh yang berperan dalam perkembangan konsepsi dan aplikasi daya saing. Berbagai hal yang mempengaruhi daya saing seperti kebijakan pembatasan ekspor juga menjadi bagian integral dalam penulisan buku ini. Buku ini menyajikan konteks daya saing wilayah / daerah dan daya saing komoditas pertanian dengan berbagai alat analisis. Pada bagian akhir buku, daya saing dikaitkan dengan perannya dalam pemenuhan pangan dan peningkatan kesejahteraan petani.
