Sinopsis

Buku ini merupakan hasil kajian mendalam terhadap karya tafsir Sahl at-Tustarî yang diberi judul Tafsîr al-Qur’ân al-Azîm. Sebagian besar isi buku ini merepresentasikan gagasan hermeneutika sufi Sahl at-Tustarî dan beberapa jawaban terhadap problematika yang menyasar kredensial para mufassir sufi yang kerap dituduh melakukan tindakan heretik, ketika karya mereka disamakan dengan karya-karya yang memuat penakwilan Batiniah yang termasuk salah satu kelompok aliran Syi’ah. Meski sebagian besar tuduhan heretik itu tidak terbukti, upaya-upaya penafsiran al-Qur’an yang dilakukan kaum sufi masih saja diperdebatkan, sebagaimana tergambar dalam fatwa yang penulis bahas di bab terakhir buku ini seputar penafsiran sufi dan catatan perkembangannya. Selain memberi ulasan konklusif, bab tersebut juga berupaya memetakan kajian penafsiran sufi secara generik, sekaligus menjadi upaya klarifikasi terhadap kedudukan penafsiran sufi dalam disiplin ilmu tafsir. Perkembangan penulisan khazanah tafsir al-Qur’an yang bercorak sufistik setelah masa hidup Sahl at-Tustarî konon memang banyak menimbulkan kontroversi. Pada saat itu, perkembangan kajian skolastik Islam sendiri cenderung mengarah ke proses pembentukan ortodoksi  yang turut mempersoalkan kedudukan penafsiran sufi sebagai bagian dari ilmu-ilmu keislaman. Selain itu, ulasan konklusif yang lebih umum di bagian akhir buku sengaja dibuat untuk menampilkan aspek kajian yang lebih variatif, bukan hanya tentang gagasan-gagasan mistik Sahl at-Tustarî semata, tetapi juga berupaya menakar pengaruh yang ditimbulkannya kepada para sufi di generasi sesudahnya dalam kerangka perkembangan penafsiran sufi yang lebih luas.
