Laryngeal Contrasts in Madurese Stops

Sinopsis

This book entitled Laryngeal Contrasts in Madurese Stops presents and discusses laryngeal contrasts in Madurese stop consonants. It thoroughly examines several acoustic measures that are commonly used to distinguish them in the world’s languages and in Madurese as a focal case in point. For this purpose, the book is divided into four major parts.

The first part introduces the rationale of the book and sets the stage for the topics. The second part addresses and discusses theoretical backgrounds for understanding voicing and laryngeal contrasts. This part describes and discusses how laryngeal contrasts are commonly manifested through acoustic properties in the world’s languages. The third part presents and discusses acoustic correlates of laryngeal contrasts in Madurese stops. We specifically look at acoustic properties such as voice onset time (VOT), stop closure duration, fundamental frequency ( F0), and voice quality measures, i.e. H1*-A1*, H1*-A2*, H1*-A3*, H1*-H2*, H2*-H4*, and ceptral peak prominence (CPP). The last part wraps up the whole discussion of the book.

We hope the book provides meaningful and benificial resources for our understanding about pecific acoustic aspects of the laryngeal contrast in Madurese. We also hope it gives insightful knowledge about general aspects of Madurese phonetics and phonology that may inspire and stimulate further interest in that specific field.

Misnadin, Universitas Trunojoyo Madura

Misnadin was born in Pamekasan, Madura, East Java Province, Indonesia. He earned a Bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature from Airlangga University, Indonesia; a Master's  degree in Advanced Linguistics from The University of Queensland, Australia in 2010, working with John Ingram; and a PhD from The University of Edinburgh, UK in 2016, where he worked with James Kirby and Bert Remijsen. He has joined Universitas Trunojoyo Madura as an English lecturer since 2003. He currently teaches Introduction to Linguistics, Phonetics, Phonology, Syntax, and Linguistics Research Methodology. He currently serves as Head of the Language Center of Universitas Trunojoyo Madura.

Misnadin has written scholarly articles published in reputable international journals, including: Madurese (published in the Journal of the International Phonetic Association, Q1); Acoustic correlates of plosive voicing in Madurese (published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Q1); Phonetic realisations of Madurese vowels and their implications for the Madurese vowel system (published in the Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics, Q2); Voice onset time and vowel quality in Madurese: The role of gender and dialect (published in the Journal of Asia-Pacific Language Variation, Q4), and Acoustic cues to the perception of plosive voicing in Madurese (published in Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Q1). His main research interests include language variation, phonology, acoustic phonetics, socio-phonetic variation, and language documentation.
