Buku ini menelusuri transformasi politik Indonesia di era digital, ketika batas antara pemilih dan penggemar kian kabur. Politik tidak lagi sekadar ruang rasional untuk menilai program dan kebijakan, tetapi telah berubah menjadi panggung besar tempat tokoh-tokoh tampil sebagai idola dan masyarakat bertindak layaknya fandom. Fenomena “fans politik” lahir dari kombinasi emosi, algoritma media sosial, dan budaya partisipatif yang membuat politik terasa seperti konser K-pop yang penuh simbol, slogan, dan loyalitas afektif.
Para penulis mengurai bagaimana logika rasional pemilih yang dijelaskan dalam Rational Choice Theory kini tersaingi oleh Affective Intelligence Theory yang menempatkan emosi sebagai penggerak utama perilaku politik. Dalam konteks ini, dukungan terhadap figur seperti Joko Widodo, Prabowo Subianto, atau Anies Baswedan lebih banyak dimotivasi oleh persona dan citra ketimbang visi kebijakan. Media sosial berperan besar membentuk mitologi politik, di mana citra sederhana, humor, dan gestur simbolik lebih efektif daripada argumen rasional.
Dengan menggunakan pendekatan interdisipliner, menggabungkan teori komunikasi politik, semiotika Roland Barthes, Social Identity Theory, dan konsep mediatization of politics dari Jesper Strömbäck, buku ini menunjukkan bagaimana tanda, warna, dan narasi visual bekerja menciptakan identitas kolektif. Politik kemudian menjadi budaya populer, dengan relawan bertransformasi menjadi fangroup, menciptakan konten, meme, dan merchandise sebagai bentuk fan labor yang memperkuat emosi dan loyalitas terhadap kandidat.
Buku ini juga menyoroti munculnya affective economy dalam politik: emosi menjadi modal sosial dan ekonomi baru. Donasi, merchandise, hingga viralitas di media sosial bukan sekadar ekspresi dukungan, tetapi bagian dari sirkulasi rasa cinta, bangga, dan benci yang membentuk identitas kelompok. Para penulis memperingatkan bahwa meski politik afektif membuka ruang partisipasi baru, ia juga menimbulkan risiko polarisasi dan kehilangan refleksi rasional.
Melalui analisis tajam dan gaya naratif yang reflektif, Fans Politik, Bukan Pemilih mengajak pembaca memahami wajah baru demokrasi Indonesia: demokrasi yang penuh gairah, estetika, dan kedekatan digital—namun juga rapuh oleh logika algoritma dan euforia fandom. Buku ini menantang pembaca untuk bertanya: apakah kita masih menjadi warga negara yang berpikir, atau hanya penonton setia dalam konser besar bernama demokrasi?
