Perkembangan ilmu sejarah dewasa ini menuntut adanya perluasan horizon intelektual yang melampaui batas tradisional antara manusia dan alam. Paradigma baru yang dikenal sebagai environmental historiography menandai pergeseran dari pandangan yang menempatkan alam sekadar sebagai latar (background) menuju pemahaman bahwa lingkungan adalah entitas historis yang ikut berperan dalam membentuk peradaban manusia. Dalam konteks inilah, sejarah lingkungan lokal menjadi medan konseptual yang penting untuk dikembangkan, bukan hanya sebagai tema penelitian, tetapi sebagai kerangka berpikir yang memandu cara membaca hubungan manusia dan ruang ekologisnya secara historis.
Buku “Sejarah Lingkungan Lokal: Kerangka Konseptual dan Metodologis” ini disusun sebagai pedoman dasar (conceptual and methodological guide) bagi peneliti, dosen, maupun mahasiswa yang hendak menekuni kajian sejarah lingkungan pada skala lokal. Fokus utama buku ini mencakup tiga ranah penting. Pertama, konsep dasar sejarah lingkungan lokal, yang menjelaskan definisi, pengertian, dan karakteristik historis-ekologis dari lingkungan sebagai bagian integral dari sejarah manusia. Kedua, ruang lingkup kajian sejarah lingkungan lokal, yang menguraikan batas tematik dan spasial kajian, mulai dari lanskap agraris, sistem air, hingga perubahan ekologis akibat kolonialisme atau industrialisasi. Ketiga, unsur-unsur lingkungan lokal yang dapat dianalisis secara historis, seperti tanah, air, hutan, dan praktik budaya masyarakat dalam mengelola ruang ekologinya.
Buku ini akan memperkenalkan beberapa teori dan pendekatan interdisipliner yang lazim digunakan dalam penelitian sejarah lingkungan, seperti cultural landscape theory, historical ecology, dan political ecology. Ketiganya dijelaskan secara singkat agar pembaca memperoleh pemahaman tentang cara menggunakannya dalam konteks penelitian sejarah lingkungan lokal. Penjelasan tersebut bersifat operasional—memberi panduan awal bagi peneliti untuk menentukan relevansi teori dan pendekatan sesuai konteks wilayah, data, dan tujuan penelitian yang akan dilakukan. Dengan demikian, buku ini dapat dikatakan sebagai peta epistemologis (epistemic mapping) bagi mereka yang ingin melangkah dalam penelitian sejarah lingkungan lokal di Indonesia. Ia mengajak pembaca untuk berpikir kritis tentang bagaimana alam, masyarakat, dan sejarah berinteraksi dalam ruang dan waktu yang spesifik. Pendekatan lokalitas dalam buku ini menegaskan bahwa setiap lanskap memiliki “ingatan” yang unik—sebuah ecological memory—yang dapat dibaca melalui dokumen, narasi, maupun tradisi lisan.
