Synopsis

Using English in Public Places presents some topics in the use of English in Public places. The goal of the book is to introduce students to English vocabulary items and relevant expressions used in public places such as office, university, bank, hotel, etc. With this purpose in mind, it is hoped that students’ vocabulary and their English expressions related to public places will expand and most importantly they can practice and use them appropriately.

This book is divided into six units with each unit containing English skills such as speaking, writing, and grammar. Unit 1 talks about office and some items that are commonly found in an office. It also discusses the modal auxiliaries can and could. Unit 2 introduces activities that take place at university. It particularly presents lexical items related to activities in university such as lectures and assignment. It also explains the proper use of the modal auxiliaries must, mustn’t and needn’t. Unit 3 talks about bank, explaining some banking terms such as automatic teller machine (ATMs), withdrawal, deposit, etc. This unit also discusses the use of the modal auxiliary should. Unit 4 discusses everything about hotel, such as vocabularies, reading text, writing exercises and game related to hotel. It discusses the use of simple present tense as the topic of grammar focus subunit. Unit 5 describes about library. It includes English skills related to the library and presents new vocabularies. It also explains the use of simple past tense. Unit 6 is about museum. Things related to museum are presented in this unit, including vocabularies, speaking phrases, reading text, and the present continuous tense as the topic of the grammar focus.

We hope the book provides meaningful and beneficial resources for students’ understanding and practical use of English in Public Places. We also hope it give insightful knowledge about the general aspect of office, university, bank, hotel, library, and museum that can motivate students to learn, practice, and use English in public places

Author Biographies

Misnadin, Universitas Trunodjoyo Madura

Misnadin was born in Pamekasan, Madura, East Java Province, Indonesia. He earned a Bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature from Airlangga University, Indonesia; a Master's degree in Advanced Linguistics from The University of Queensland, Australia in 2010; and a PhD from The University of Edinburgh, UK in 2016. He has joined Universitas Trunojoyo Madura as an English lecturer since 2003. He currently teaches English for Specific Purposes, Introduction to Linguistics, Phonetics, Phonology, Syntax, and Linguistics Research Methodology. He currently serves as Head of the Language Center of Universitas Trunojoyo Madura.

Izzatun Nafsi Mustafidah, Universitas Trunodjoyo Madura

Izzatun Nafsi Mustafidah was born in Bangkalan, Madura, East Java Province, Indonesia. She earned a Bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature from Universitas Trunojoyo Madura (UTM), Indonesia. She has joined UTM since 2019 working at the Language Center. Her main tasks at the institution include, but are not limited to, administering and invigilating English language proficiency tests, updating test papers, handling students’ complaints, and other administrative work.

Ulfah Rizkyanita Sari, Universitas Trunodjoyo Madura

Ulfah Rizkyanita Sari was born in Sampang, Madura, East Java Province, Indonesia. She obtained a Bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature from Universitas Trunojoyo Madura (UTM), Indonesia. She has joined UTM since 2014 working at the Language Center. Her main responsibilities at the institution include administering and invigilating English language proficiency tests, updating test papers, dealing with students’ services, and other administrative work. Ulfah has also taught English both online and offline in addition to her main job at the Language Center.
