Perubahan besar yang terjadi pada masyarakat global menempatkan pendidikan tinggi pada persimpangan strategis. Perkembangan teknologi cerdas, kecerdasan buatan, otomatisasi, serta krisis lingkungan dan sosial menandai pergeseran dari era Industry 4.0 menuju Industry 5.0 dan Society 5.0. Pergeseran tersebut tidak hanya memunculkan tantangan teknologis, tetapi juga menggugah pertanyaan mendasar mengenai makna kemajuan, posisi manusia, serta tanggung jawab institusi pendidikan tinggi terhadap masa depan peradaban.
Universitas tidak lagi cukup dipahami sebagai ruang transmisi ilmu pengetahuan atau pabrik pencetak tenaga kerja terampil. Harapan publik bergerak ke arah yang lebih luas, menempatkan universitas sebagai institusi pembentuk manusia yang berdaya, beretika, dan mampu berkontribusi aktif terhadap pemecahan persoalan nyata masyarakat. Kebutuhan inilah yang melahirkan berbagai pendekatan baru pendidikan tinggi, salah satunya konsep enterprising university.
Pemaknaan enterprising university perlu disosialisasikan secara lebih luas agar publik tidak terjebak pada reduksi makna yang menyempitkan konsep ini sekadar sebagai penguatan kewirausahaan kampus atau orientasi pasar. Enterprising university merupakan pendekatan pendidikan tinggi yang komprehensif dan integratif. Fokus utamanya terletak pada pengembangan kapasitas manusia, keberanian berinisiatif, kemampuan beradaptasi terhadap perubahan, keberanian mengambil risiko, serta penciptaan nilai yang bermakna secara sosial dan etis. Paradigma ini relevan menjawab tantangan Industry 5.0 dan Society 5.0 yang menuntut kolaborasi manusia dan teknologi secara beradab.
Buku ini disusun sebagai ikhtiar konseptual dan reflektif guna memberikan penjelasan filosofis mengenai enterprising university. Uraian dimulai dari pembacaan kritis terhadap krisis dan disrupsi pendidikan tinggi, dilanjutkan penelusuran fondasi filosofis dan nilai, hingga penerjemahan paradigma enterprising ke dalam kurikulum, tata kelola, kebijakan, serta sistem pengukuran kinerja universitas. Di dalam buku ini dimasukkan nilai ihsan dan ditempatkan sebagai jiwa yang menuntun seluruh proses transformasi agar orientasi perubahan tetap terarah pada kemanusiaan dan keridaan Sang Pencipta.
